WE THE BEACH PEOPLE
Hearing the roar of the ocean in our new driveway was the first sign we were embarking on a special journey. We were now beach people. Three years ago we took a leap of faith- we sold our house, closed our large studio, and moved to the NC Coast. We had discussed it for years and finally made the move. It inspired us to do more of what we wanted in all aspects of life. This started the new era of our brand, Sylvia Benson - My Own Little World. We The Beach People pieces are literal, some cheeky, others are meant to be inspirational, but all have an underlying theme of our new coastal life.
“We are all molded by the experiences in our lives. It’s those experiences, big and small, that make us who we are. It’s why we love what we love, wear what we wear, and are who we are. We call this ‘My Own Little World’”.
Each letter of the MOLW Script is carefully hand-caved representing our individual journeys and the uniqueness of us all.
inspired by the Bermudian architecture of Alys Beach and the symmetry and lines of its hardscape. We referenced the luxe, laid-back beach living with palm tree-lined streets, perfectly manicured courtyards, and the town's seamless cohesion to craft a collection of beautiful, timeless staples.
One of the first things we noticed when relocating to the coast wERE the countless butterflies migrating to a warmer climate. Hundreds if not thousands of tireless butterflies flew over us while we combed the beaches for inspiration. This collection pays homage to their migration and our own personal migration or “butterfly move.”
For this collection, we used the intricate textures and patterns of collected shells to create a sculpturally bold interpretation of the butterfly migration. Each butterfly wing is first delicately molded from a shell and then meticulously hand-formed into its final shape.
Aloe is a healing plant, and to designer, Katie, it is symbolic of her paternal grandmother. “As a child, it was fascinating to me that she would just break off a piece of the leaf. Any cut, scrape or bee sting was met with the soothing and healing power of my grandmother and her aloe plants. I keep them in my home today because of her.” Masterfully crafted, each piece is hand-molded from her aloe plants to create a modern interpretation of an age-old remedy. The Aloe collection defines languid glamour.
